Plan for Dry Seasons Before They Arrive

  • Covers grazing acres and haying acres

  • Federally subsidized programs

  • You choose your coverage periods

  • Customizable protection levels

Pasture, Rangeland & Forage (PRF) insurance is a federally subsidized program designed to help livestock and hay producers manage the financial impact of reduced precipitation. When dry conditions cut into forage production, the added costs of replacement feed, destocking, or herd management can add up quickly. PRF helps offset those expenses before a difficult season becomes a crisis.

PRF is area-based, meaning it doesn’t measure rainfall on your specific property. The program uses a base value by county along with historic rainfall data and grids to determine coverage. If rainfall falls short of the norm during a covered interval, a payment is triggered.

When you enroll, you’ll choose which two-month intervals to insure, a coverage level between 70 and 90 percent, and a productivity factor that matches the protection to your operation’s value.

One important note: Pasture, Rangeland & Forage is not drought insurance. A drought declaration in your county does not automatically trigger a payment. Coverage is based solely on measured precipitation against historical norms in your grid.
